Skopje, October 22, 2024- TITAN USJE is among the first in the country to actively apply circular practices, especially through the co-processing of alternative fuels such as rice husks and rejects from the textile industry. In the period from 2020 to 2024, about 5% of the thermal energy used by USJE furnaces comes from non-fossil fuels. These practices significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels and contribute to the decarbonization of cement production processes.
This was emphasized by Natasa Bakreska, Environmental and Alternative Fuels Manager at TITAN USJE, at the "National workshop for the consolidation of the institutional framework for the transition to a circular economy", organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which was held in Skopje today. Concepts and business models of the circular economy, successful examples of their implementation and challenges were presented at the workshop. By co-processing alternative fuels such as biomass and textile rejects, TITAN USJE sets an example of how cement industry is an integrated link in the circular economy, and can contribute to significant decarbonization and a positive impact on the environment and society.
"We are ready to make available our experiences and expertise for the benefit of the wider industry and society. The company managed to divert from landfilling over 13,000 tons of biomass as rice husks, and textiles, plastics, paper and cardboard not suitable for recycling. Doing so, USJE has a positive impact to environment by reducing dependency on natural resources and is a safe, sustainable solution for waste management problem”, said Bakreska.
USJE is also actively working on the production of low-carbon cements, managing to reduce 2,600 tons of CO2 in 2023 compared to 2022 – a result equivalent to decommissioning 560 cars annually. The company aims to reduce the percentage of clinker in cement from 70% to 63% by 2030, maintaining the high quality of the products, contributing to TITAN GROUP target of net-zero till 2050.
TITAN USJE remains committed to its mission of sustainable development and actively supports North Macedonia in its circular transition efforts, while contributing to improving the quality of the environment and achieving global climate goals.
